When can my child join Scouting?
Most young people in Clydesdale start their Scouting journey in Beavers, which typically begins at age 6. Some local Groups also offer a Squirrels section, where children can start from age 4. From there, young people move through the sections as they grow: Cubs from around 8, Scouts from 10½, and Explorers from 14 to 18.
Each Group manages its own waiting list, so start ages may vary slightly depending on local availability.
How much does membership cost?
On average, membership costs around £45 per term, but this varies between Groups depending on what’s included (e.g. badges, activities, hall hire). Some Groups collect subs weekly, monthly or termly, and may use direct debit.
If cost is a concern, please don’t hesitate to speak to your local leader — we want Scouting to be accessible to every young person, and there may be support available.
How will my child benefit from joining Scouts?
Scouting offers your child the chance to try new things, grow in confidence, and build friendships that often last for life. Parents regularly tell us that Scouts has helped their child become more independent, develop social skills, and take part in activities they wouldn't have experienced elsewhere — from campfires to kayaking and everything in between.
Why has my local Group got a waiting list?
Scouting in Clydesdale is more popular than ever — but we can only offer spaces to as many young people as we have volunteers to support them. Many local Groups do have waiting lists.
One way to help shorten the list is by getting involved. Whether you can give a little time or a lot, there's always a role that fits — and more volunteers means more young people can join the adventure.
